Pumpkin Patches were not a “thing” when I was younger. In fact I don’t remember carving pumpkins until quite late on in childhood and even then, there were other Halloween traditions that overtook this.
However, times have certainly changed and now instead of picking up a pumpkin with your weekly shop, you can make a day of it picking your own from colourful pumpkin patches across the country.
We donned our welly boots and raincoats last weekend to visit a new Pumpkin Patch – Jolly Pumpkin – located in Exeter. When we pulled up to the humungous field, the children were squealing with excitement. I have to admit, I was quite excited myself. I love all things Halloween and Autumn so this was my kind of afternoon and I couldn’t wait to get stomping through the mud to find our perfect pumpkins.
There were over 25 varieties of pumpkin, squash and gourd to choose from, we have never seen so many different pumpkins and the colours were fantastic. Amelie and Charlie were eager to pick up a wheelbarrow – green for Charlie and purple for Amelie. Off we went exploring and adventuring through the patch. There was a little hay bale and wooden frame so you could take photos to remember your trip or to post on social media. We had such a giggle and so much fun together, Charlie found a cracking pumpkin that looked like a pair of boobies or a bum! I was more interested in the ghost and duck egg blue pumpkins, we came home with a brilliant selection.
The whole event was extremely well laid out, Covid-19 safe and if you are local to Devon/Somerset I would highly recommend a visit as it is such a lovely memory to make with the family. I’ve never had so many messages on social media asking where the patch was, here are all the details:-
- Entry is free with plenty of parking on site
- There’s a portaloo towards the entrance – handy for the littles
- Pumpkins start at just £1, card & cash are accepted and you only pay for what you pick
